Upon being invited to contribute to the exhibition for the Swiss Art Awards, we wished to design a single piece that could be displayed in two different sites – the roof terrace of our office and at the 2010 Swiss Design Awards in the Messe Basel exhibition hall. The sculpture – a car without a body, featuring only a roof on stilts – is designed so that its roof sits just below eye level.
The condition of having two sites led us to a design that creates a self-referential loop of meaning for the object. Wherever the object stands, it speaks of the other condition – just as the roof cut off from a car tells of the original car. Cabriolet was itself subsequently awarded the prestigious Swiss Art Award.
