Socinstrasse 9+11 is a competition project to replace two buildings in a quiet street in Basel, with a divers mix of simple and representative city housing from different periods.
The access to the apartments is provided from the street through the porch. From the hall way behind, a generously sized elevator leads directly into the apartment or through the passage into the garden and to the exterior staircase. From the elevator you enter the apartments through a vestibule that prevents direct insights into the apartment. The second access via rear staircase provides each apartment a direct connection to the common garden, designed as pocket park.
All apartments have one continuous room from east to west, which widens to the garden side. This central space is divided by furniture that combines kitchen, wardrobe and storage space. It acts as a lounge with niches to retire and provides access to all other rooms of the apartment.
